In 2002, remnants of an ancient port had beenacknowledgedin Shuikutouby archaeologists. The construction materials used were mixture of sugar water, sticky rice juice, and oyster shell sand from hundreds years ago. In 2003, former Tainan County Government designated the Shuikutou relics as Municipal Historic Site and sketched the plan of Madou Cultural Park of Ancient Port. The Park aims to reproduce nostalgic scenes where there were massive port area, warehouses on the piers, aged wells, Phoenix Pond, Dragon Cave, and Madou Tribe of Plains Aborigines. Daofong Lagoon Museum in the Park demonstrates a fusion of cultures between Han Chinese and Plains Aborigines. Its architecture well collocates red bricks from Han People’s traditional buildings in southern Fujian Province and bamboos used in Plains Aborigines’ houses. The slanted and wave-like walls convey the images of ships departing and arriving the port.
