【Micro-theater: Handwriting after X Erasing X Elapsing】
Solo Exhibition of Huai-hsuan Chiu, Resident Artist in Tsung Yeh

“Micro-theater: Handwriting after X Erasing X Elapsing- Solo Exhibition of Huai-hsuan Chiu, Resident Artist in Tsung Yeh” is on display from today till December 25th at Red-brick Craft Hall in Tsung Yeh Arts and Cultural Center. The opening held on November 25th drew grand crowds. The artist personally guided the visitors through the exhibition and brought about many interactions between the audience and her works.

Huai-hsuan Chiu was among the 5 selected artists in a competitive open call drawing 98 applicants worldwide for the residency in Tsung Yeh Artist Village in 2016. Chiu earned an MFA from the Department of Sculpture, National Taiwan University of Arts. She primarily works in sculpture by using wood as a main material. In 2011, she was the winner of Horizon Award in the 15th Yulon Wood Sculpture Award. Chiu has been invited to exhibit her works and participate in various symposiums. Recently, her creations have been displayed in art galleries and outdoor spaces in Taiwan.

The series of creations, exploring and preserving fading-away memories, is presented through stage performances. Under the manipulation of the dynamic installation, the work becomes a micro-theater with actors moving in sequence. With the procession of movements, visualization of certain time periods and spaces keeps expanding allowing visitors to pass through memory and imagination so as to customize storylines. During her residency, inspired by the closed Tsung Yeh Elementary School and Japanese-style buildings, the artist has transformed school desks to a theater stage, on which pencils and erasers have been depicted as sugarcanes and warehouses to bring about the imagery of a sugar factory. The audience are invited to fill the blanks on the stage with their own memories and imagination to further explore childhood memories.

Tsung Yeh Arts and Cultural Center opens from 9:00~17:00, Wednesdays to Sundays. You are welcome to rediscover those good old days while sitting at the aged school desks and chairs.
