Founded in 2018, O2 LAB Art&Tech started as a creative duo comprised of a Japanese artist yukaotani, and a Taiwanese engineer hankou, exploring the interdisciplinary fields of visual art, design, and digital technologies. Coming from a different professional and cultural background, our collaboration is spontaneous and improvisational. We often find inspirations from the history, culture, and social phenomena that are peculiar to Taiwan and Japan. We play with the elements of interaction, digital /analog data, and visual effects. Our current studio practice focuses on revitalizing everyday materials that are overlooked or often considered obsolete. We transform those materials into new art objects and installations by combining digital fabrication components.

‘Sugar and Water: deposition of time’ is an exhibition by a creative duo, yukaotani & hank ou focusing on the history of sugar and water which are the integral elements that nurtured the development of Tainan City. During the residency period at Tsung-Yeh Arts and Cultural Center, the duo visited the local landmarks such as the Daofeng Inland Sea which was once the hub of sugar production and trading in the Dutch Period, the Cianan Irrigation built during the Japanese Colonial Period, and the lately-built intake and the underground water channel on Zenwen River. The duo utilizes sugar as an artistic medium to embody the flow and deposition of time and water.
