YOON Miji

Miji Yoon is a Korean artist born in Seoul who lives and works in France since 2012. She is often intrigued by the peculiar relationship between nature and human beings. Originally aspiring to become a pastry chef and settle in Tokyo, Miji's life took a drastic turn after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Instead of Japan, she arrived in France the following year and had the opportunity to participate in Tadashi Kawamata's exhibition, "Under the Water" at the Pompidou Center in Metz. These series of events guided her and opened the door to the art world.

For Miji, the landscapes that surround us are artworks created by an anonymous artist—the nature itself—which constantly draws, erases and redraws the passage of time and history. Through various artistic mediums, including photography, video, and drawing, Miji Yoon explores site-specific art to create her temporary hybrid landscapes.

Upon arriving in Tainan, I was fascinated and inspired by the unfamiliar vegetation surrounding me. Coupled with the knowledge that this area was once a part of Madou sugar factory, it brought to mind my research on the legend of the Zengwen river ; Residents along the shoreline jokingly
refer to the Zengwen river as the 'Blue Blind Snake', suggesting its tendency to divert.1 With the construction of the dam, although flooding has been prevented, it caused the disappearance of the Blue Blind Sneak. My project, “Sugar Plant”, aims to recall, recreate, and relive these hidden
stories.
